FAQs

LITE Day

Q:

What is a LITE Day?

A:

Lite Days are three sets of elective classes offered to registered families called Units. They run from Sept. to June, following the school year, and are broken into Fall Unit (Sept - Nov), Winter Unit (Jan - March), and Spring Unit (Apr - Jun).  The elective classes offered depend upon teacher (parent) availability and change with each new unit. Each unit consistes of 5 teaching days and 1 Special Day planned by the LITE day Committee.  All costs for LITE Days are included in your Membership Fee with the exception of special/optional events such as photo day.

Q:

How many units are there?

A:

3.

Fall: September - November

Winter: December - February

Spring: March - May

Q:

How is each LITE Day broken up in time slots?

A:

Each LITE Day runs from 9:30am - 12:00pm every other Monday morning.

The general format is as follows

Opening Assembly

Class A (45 Min)

Snack

Class B (45 Min)

Closing Assembly

Q:

What are my teaching requirements for LITE Day?

A:

Families (either mom or dad or both as a team) are required to teach a minimum of TWO UNITS a year.  Teaching once a year is one class (either A or B), Two Units per year in the fall, winter, OR spring.   Any parent can teach more than once if they want, but twice per year is a required minimum to keep our co-op running smoothly.  Many of our teachers help out multiple times per year.

Classes are very flexible in content. Moms (or dads) can also decide the age level of students they would prefer (usually broken into Preschool, JK/SK,  Gr. 1-4, Gr. 5-8, and Highschool) and the amount of students they can accommodate in their class.  All classes must be taught at the venue where LITE Days are being held.  Teachers are usually assigned one helper per session but more can be requested based on the need of the class.

Q:

When teaching, what is my budget per unit?

A:

$145

Q:

How many hours a week will I have to set aside for class prep time?

A:

That totally depends on you!  What are you teaching and how complex is it? How much energy do you want to put into it? Usually teachers pick a subject or elective that they already use as an everyday skill/hobby.  It's easier to teach and prepare when you already know how to do it.  Sometimes, teachers will offer the same elective class over again for multiple sessions over multiple years.  It's all up to you and what you feel comfortable with.  Teachers can even pair up with another mom with similar skills to teach the class together to lessen the prep time.

Q:

What if I am unable to teach?

A:

We are a family based cooperative, and understand that life looks different for every family. Moms with newborns often are assigned to the Nursery, as that is where they are needed to tend to their infant. Moms with "littles" can request to help in the preschool or JK/SK classes when those young'uns decide they can't leave Mom's side without a flood of tears and fits. Why? Because we've all been there. Sometimes life is so hectic with all the stresses involved in homeschooling, homesteading, being a wife and mother-- adding one more task such as large lessons plans can seem overwhelming. SALT is also a ministry. If we can support you in your time of transition, we'd rather you show up and receive encouragement then quit out of anxiety. Talk to your Lite Day session coordinator--we'll try to accommodate your preferences for teaching/helping and strive to get you the help you need.

Q:

Do you offer highschool programming?

A:

Unfortunately at this time our high school program is not running however young high school students are welcome to join in with the upper elementary electives.

Q:

Why must I always register my children?

A:

Each family has different circumstances that come up during the year.  Not all families attend each LITE Day unit.  We need each family to register their children for EACH unit (Fall, Winter & Spring) so the teachers involved can properly prepare for their class.

In order to support our teachers properly. There has to be a cut off date for child regisrtation.  The specific cut off date for each unit will be announced WELL in advance.  It will be released at the same time regisration for each unit starts.  It is NOT hard to register within the time frame allowed.

Q:

If I register my children for LITE Days, am I registered too?

A:

No, registering your children provides teachers the logistics they need to properly prepare classes.  BUT we also need to know who is available to teach or lead classes.  Registering yourself as a parent EACH unit lets us know how many adult volunteers we have abailable to run LITE Days smoothly.

Events

Q:

Am I expected to pay for each field trip event? Why isn't that included in my membership fee?

A:

While providing opportunities for families to experience extracurricular events, it is impossible to gauge appropriateness (for the age levels and maturity of your children) on behalf of all families' needs. Therefore, instead of including all field trip costs and increasing the annual fee, families are allowed to choose what field trips they want to participate in and pay on a per-event basis.  The Events Committee works hard each year to offer exciting field trips to suit the varying homeschool budgets of our families--some field trips are even free!
